The Origin and the Evolution of Fancy Dress Parties

Costume parties where people dress up in a variety of fancy dress outfits are now most commonly held during Halloween celebrated on the 31st October. The name comes from the feast of All Hallows or All Saints Day celebrated on the 1st November in honor of all the saints. The Halloween festival is actually a celebration of the end of the harvest in Gaelic culture and spread to America with the Irish immigrants and became part of popular culture.

We have all heard a lot about the fancy dress party but how many of us actually know and truly understand the origin of the fancy dress clothes party. The origins of fancy dress costumes and that of a fancy dress party can be traced right back to the fifteenth century in Italy. This is when the first masquerade balls or masked balls were held. These masquerade balls then developed into public festivities where elaborate dances were performed in fancy dress clothes. The fancy dress party is mostly organized and held for the upper class. Eventually, the fancy dress party became especially popular in Venice, Italy.

On the other hand, here in the United Kingdom, masquerade fancy dress balls only started to gain popularity during the eighteenth century and it was only by the Victorian era that the fancy dress parties were held similar to todays’ fancy dress parties.

Halloween traditions include ‘trick or treating’, making bonfires, visiting haunted houses and of course dressing up in fancy dress costumes and attending costume parties. Halloween fancy dress themes usually involve dressing up in a scary fancy dress costume like traditional ghost costumes and witch costumes.

Unusual Fancy Dress Costumes

Fancy dress parties, especially for significant birthdays, are very popular right now. But despite how fun these parties are, sometimes choosing the right fancy dress costume can be difficult. There’s nothing more gutting than showing up to a party in the same costume as one of your friends! To choose a more unusual fancy dress costume, think outside the box.

For unusual ladies fancy dress costumes, why not choose a historical figure. You can choose a popular one like Cleopatra or a Greek goddess like Medusa, but if you want to be really unusual, why not choose a more generic costume and then personalize it. Dress as a queen, and then add your own touches to become Marie Antoinette, Queen Victoria, or even Mary Queen of Scots. Or, choose a generic Indian costume and become Pocahontas, or Sacajawea.

For a groovy look, choose a generic 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s fancy dress costume and then think of a historical figure from that era that you admire. Maybe an artist or novelist?
